The author of my ad would possibly be animal rights activists. It would be someone who cares for animals, especially wild animals and is possibly apart of the circus business. The whole ad is promoting animal-free circuses. The audience of this advertisement is people who attend circuses and shows involving wild animals. The audience can also be any person depending on where this ad is hung up/shown. The argument of this ad is that animals are not our puppets; we should start attending animal-free circuses instead of them with animals being forced to perform acts. And, the text on the tiger states “the show mustn’t go on.” This argues that as long as animals such as tigers are being utilized and controlled during the circuses, then the show should not go on. There might as well be no show if animals are being used. A better option would be a show involving strictly people. This ad shows you that when you go to circuses with animals, you are supporting the idea that animals can be used as a prop/puppet. The tiger is clearly in distress, it is tied to puppet strings, it is struggling to keep its balance, and it is under a human’s control. The ad also clearly puts the logo promoting animal-free circuses.
inventory & visual rhetorical elements
Inventory: There is dark navy background color. The navy color fades into a light blue color that is behind only the tiger. The floor is black except for a lighter gray circle underneath the tiger. It looks like a spot light. There is a tiger in the center of the picture with thin, white puppet strings (tied to all four of the paws). The puppet strings are attached to a beige colored piece of wood. There is a small black shadow on the center of the wood. There are tiny letters spelling out “support animal-free circuses.” It is in a tiny font centered underneath the tiger’s paw. It is white font and has 3 white stars on each side of the sentence. Centered on the tiger’s stomach is the words “the show musn’t go on.” It is a white, and the font looks professional. It appears to be maybe times new roman. Underneath the “support animal-free circuses” text there is a yellow diamond with an animal in it (looks like their logo). Underneath that diamond is there website written in the same color, font, and size as the text above the yellow diamond. The tiger is standing in a way like he is being controlled as a puppet. The tiger looks in distress. The tiger’s left leg is in the air. The left paw is dangling (looks limp) and pointing downwards while the right paw is pointing straight up in the air. The right leg is slightly bent, trying to balance. The tiger’s ears appear to be sitting back/down a bit. Rhetorical elements- color: dark blue color resembles gloominess, sadness, coldness. The bright blue behind the tiger makes the tiger, the main subject of the photo, pop out. The orange fur of tiger makes the tiger stand out even more compared to the overall dark background. The white color of the strings stand out on the dark background so that it is easy for the viewer to tell that they are actually puppet strings. Text: all of the text is white so that it is easy to read on the almost black background. All of the fonts appear to be times new roman which is more of a professional, serious/sophisticated text which is fitting for an ad that is on the more serious side. All of the fonts being the same makes it look more professional. The phrase on the tiger’s stomach is the biggest because it is the main point of the whole that they are trying to make (needs to be in the center and larger so that it catches the reader’s eye). Framing: there is sort of a navy blue/dark color that surrounds the outside of the photo and tiger- appears to be a frame. The inside of the photo around only the subject is light blue. This framing allows the viewers eyes to focus in the focal point of the ad, which is the orange tiger. Focal point: the large, orange tiger. The animal is centered. Contrast: bright/light color of tiger, dark color for background. Dark background, white text and white puppet strings. Makes everything stand out and catch the reader’s attention. Arrangement: the tiger, puppet strings, text, and block of wood are all centered. There is nothing on the outside/corners of the image. All of the items go up and down in a row. Our eyes will look top to bottom starting with the wood, the strings, the tiger, and ending with their phrase, logo, and website. The phrase, logo, and website are at the bottom so it is hopefully the last thing we see so we have it fresh in our mind to visit that page, who the author is, and what they are arguing. Sightlines: the puppet strings go down from the block of wood, focusing our attention on the tiger, the phrase, and the website/logo. It directs our attention to the important things in the picture. Perspective: the tiger looks 3D and life like because of its shadow on the floor and the way it is positioned. There is a shadow on the wood which helps that look 3D as well.

ad I chose
I decided that the ad that I will be utilizing is the animal one. It has a tiger on puppet strings with the caption “the show musn’t go on.” This image is an advertisement for animal-free circuses. I chose this ad for my essay because I am huge into animal rights, and this is something I’m very passionate about. I am almost certain that how passionate I am about this will affect my essay in a positive light. The ad is about how wild animals are not our puppets, especially at circuses. We must stop using animals for entertainment and in shows. Instead, we should switch to animal-free circuses. There are also a few elements that I will talk about that are being used regarding, framing, color, etc. Rhetorical appeals are also utilized in this ad-pathos being a huge one. The audience is possibly people who go to circuses, or it could really be anyone (depending where this ad is posted). Mainly it is aimed at people who attend circuses. The author is possibly animal rights activists. The argument is to stop abusing/using wild animals as our puppets and making them do whatever we want- specifically using them in circuses. They want people to switch to animal-free circuses.

ads
One ad I like is one from the google docs. It is the Crest tooth paste one. There ae visible elements that are used to have a certain effect on the viewer and the ad itself is persuasive. I already know what I would discuss if I were to use that ad for the paper. (cant’t get the image to post). Another ad I chose was the animal one. Animal rights are extremely important to me and this ad is perfect at pulling on your heart strings. It really does a good job at using pathos. I would talk about the appeals and how it shapes what people think about wild animals (and their) rights. The ad is super captivating and memorable; it does a good job at providing a message. Another one I liked from the google docs (it won’t let me insert the picture) is the one under armor one with the woman. I would touch on how if you wear under armor, you are strong, powerful, and can do anything, especially even if you are a girl. It shows that people who wake up in the morning and wear under armor throughout their day won’t give up. I would also talk about elements and appeals that are used.
blog post due 10/17
extra cred version
I am using the same image that I used in my last blog post. I am using color and text. The color of the image is red/pink overall. There is black shading over the red/pink color. There is black shading over everything in the photo except the words are in red. This helps the title, explanation, and location be easily seen. It stands out on the black background. Since red is used to show that someone is hungry, they used this red since it is deal with Panera Bread bagels and coffee (along with studying for the practical). The text looking handwritten feels casual, personal, and kind of scholary. It deals with college students so its text being written like how students write, could be more appealing to them. The title and the free bagels and coffee are in bolded text to catch the viewers eye. They want the free food to catch their eye because it gives them a reason to go to the study session. The title is in bolded text so that right off the bat, people can see what exactly the event is. The title is the largest size of text so that it can be easily read. The author of this is a student/teacher who is going to run a mock practical and can help test student’s knowledge of the bones while also providing Panera bagels and coffee. The audience of this would be anatomy 201 college students who are struggling with studying for the anatomy practical. These flyers were only in Woodworth so they are also aimed at specifically Woodworth residents in the anatomy 201 class. The argument is that if you are struggling with studying for the anatomy 201 practical over the skeletal-muscular system, you need to go to this mock practical in the LLC resource room on September 14th to study, and receive bagels and coffee.
visual text
-red peaking through black color of the paper….more red on the outsides
-the words are a bright red color, easier to see and clear to read
-paper is small and is about 5 by 5 inches
-at the top of the paper is a drawing of 5 bagels
-the bagels are red with a dusting of black on them, the seeds are not shaded in black, they have the red peaking through
-the title bones and bagels is in more of a professional font compared to the words “nervous about your anat 210 practical? Need more practice before the big exam? Come test your skeletal-muscular knowledge in this mock practical!” professional vs laid back text
-the title is in huge block letters where the info about it is small and skinny like a pencil
-right below the infow is the same font as the title (more of block letters) but still quite small saying “free Panera bagels and coffee”
-underneath the “free Panera bagels and coffee” is the location of the mock practical in the pencil looking font
-in the bottom right corner is the Panera bread logo
-underneath all of the text is an extremely faint picture of ribs
-the red border is thick on the right side of the paper and pretty skinny on the other sides
-panera bread logo is not in its classic colors, there is black shaded square around the logo and the logo itself I in the bright red color
-everything is centered except for the location of the event due to the Panera logo taking up space
I chose an email about an orchestra jazz concert at Ball State.
The argument is to not miss the jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. The author is music@bsu.edu. It is people working with anything related to music/music centers at Ball State University. The audience is any student who goes to Ball State. This is junk mail that I, and other students received. It seems to be aimed at music lovers. It does have a bit of rhetorical exigency. It is possible to get people to go to the orchestra. They want us to “witness this powerhouse group comprised of 15 of the finest jazz soloists and ensemble players today.” There were specific dates, times, and locations offered so people know all of the details and no way of missing where it is taking place at. Offering all of the information that is needed to know about the orchestra and talking highly about the players can influence people to go to the show. They use blue coloring for the link to the orchestra page to make it easy to find and stand out. This can make people more likely to click on it and read about it since all other lettering is black, and they want to know why/what is the bright blue link.
blank space
It appears that Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” music video follows the typical story of Taylor’s love life. She meets a new guy, warns him that she is crazy, he cheats on her/does something to upset, and she gets revenge on him. Once the guy learns his lesson, he drives off, terrified of Taylor, and new man pulls up pretty soon after. It is a continuous cycle. Her video is about meeting a guy, getting cheated on, and her tormenting him once she finds out. I think this because in the video she starts out in a happy relationship where her and her partner are riding bikes and being playful. Even though her relationship seems to be “good” at that point, she warns him that she can be crazy if she needs to be. The video fast forwards to a picnic that the two are having, and Taylor catches her boyfriend talking to another girl on his phone when is supposed to be spending time with her. A series of events then play out where Taylor is seeking revenge on him. She cuts his clothes, lights his stuff on fire, throws his phone into a pool, etc. He gets the memo and drives up, only to have a red car pull in with a similar looking guy. Her video is basically showing that there are consequences for your actions. When the guy was loyal and caring, she was nice to him. When he was caught by her, he was punished.
reflection- essay 2
It was difficult putting what I wanted to say into words. I knew the ideas I wanted to use, but not how to use them. It was fun getting to write about my family’s tradition. I have never known the details of the tradition or when it started, so it was fun to have a learning moment along the way. It was easy interviewing and embedding the quotes but hard trying to cite them. I had Purdue owl help me out the best it could. It was fun to laugh with my family about the memories we made, and it was fun to be an interviewer. Instead of following the “typical” procedures for an essay, I got to do something out of the ordinary, and interview people. This helped me take even more control the paper. I got to choose who I wanted to ask questions, what I wanted to ask, when I wanted to ask, and how I wanted to ask. It was cool to add in photos as well. This allows the reader to actually see the artifacts used, and the actual people involved. With the photos, actually having faces allows the tradition and the meaning come off stronger to the reader. It was not fun doing citations.
thesis
Due to my family living scattered all around the country, a tradition of lighting a candle at the same time on Christmas Day takes place consistently each year. Even though its origin is short and simple, the meaning is so much deeper. Because my family cannot all be together on Christmas Day, our tradition has taught us togetherness, and has brought us all closer than ever before.
